Class Description
Light will be shed on these wondrous watery beings, and participants will have the opportunity to be up close and personal with some of the species growing in the waters of Cedar Lake. The class will focus mostly on the submergent (underwater) and floating-leaf plants of Cedar Lake, but will include some of the emergent (emerging above water) plants as well. A general introduction of aquatic plants and lake systems will take place at the Cedar Lake shoreline (weather permitting), and will be followed by a more interactive focus on observations of form, structure, and notable characteristics of some pre-collected aquatic plant samples. The samples will be available for close study, observation, and handling from display buckets and trays. Plant identification and scientific lingo will be present but not the prime focus.
About the Teacher
Amanda Klain says, "What began in the 1990’s as a piqued interest in herbs, soon developed into a passionate lifetime dedication to plants. I have been working professionally with the Michigan flora since 2006, and have extensive knowledge in plant identification, botanical field work, herbarium work and more. I work as a field botanist conducting rare plant surveys, researching both invasive species and rare plant species, doing aquatic vegetation surveys in Michigan lakes, and collecting native seed for a seed bank program for the Chicago Botanical Garden. I am also a full-fledged plant spirit woman whose heart is made of chlorophyll I think :) "
